WHAT IS COUNSELING?

At Phoenix Rising, we view counseling or therapy as many call it as a journey. We believe everyone could benefit from counseling. There is no wrong reason to seek counseling. Society today still places a stigma on those who do seek therapy. It has gotten better, though often there is still a sense of shame some feel for quote unquote needing counseling, some people look down on or treat those in therapy as if there is something wrong with them. There are countless people who struggle with symptoms and effects from depression, anxiety, ADHD, anger, trauma, including PTSD, and more. It doesn't mean something is wrong with you. It does indicate you likely need someone to walk with you through it and to help you find ways to cope and to heal. You need support. You need encouragement. Here at Phoenix Rising, we take a holistic approach; we are person-centered in view therapy as an ongoing process rather than a short series of meetings to find a " unquote solution. You have likely heard of CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy and possibly solution-focused brief therapy. The therapy behind this is that every individual can be quote unquote cured in 6 to 12 sessions. This may work for a struggle to stop smoking or deciding whether or not to move across the country for a job. However, many people have needs and concerns that go far deeper than that. We see therapy as a journey or a process that takes time to work through. During that process, you learn about yourself, you grow, you heal. Sometimes you may quote-unquote take a break from therapy as you live in your healing. Sometimes people return later to work on new things or aspects of their healing, of which they were not aware at the time they chose to stop therapy.
