FAQs
Questions About Insurance
Do you accept insurance, and what are the payment options?
Yes, we do accept most major insurances. You will need to verify with your insurance what your exact coverage includes. The majority of insurances are processed through Headway (headway.co or login.headway.co). You will need to create an account with Headway, link to the counselor, and then you will be able to schedule through the Headway portal as well. For those who do not have insurance or would prefer to not use their insurance, we do offer self-pay (payment options for self-pay include cash, Venmo, or PayPal). Co-pays made through Headway can be made with your HSA card, credit, or debit card.

How confidential are your services?
Your privacy is our priority. All sessions are confidential and conducted in compliance with HIPAA regulations. Information is only shared with your explicit consent, except in rare cases required by law (imminent risk of harm, child abuse or neglect, animal abuse, or elder abuse). We use secure platforms for telehealth to protect your data.
Do you offer services for children or teens?
Yes, we work with children as young as age 4 and teens. The primary modality will be Sandplay therapy, augmented at times with some forms of play therapy. Sandplay helps younger clients regulate emotions, build resilience, and navigate life’s challenges in a safe, supportive environment. We also work with parents on parenting skills and techniques.
What Services do we offer at Phoenix Rising Counseling and Coaching?
We provide holistic counseling for individuals, couples, and families, often starting at age 4. We have also successfully worked with individuals on addressing postpartum depression, grief, and other symptoms related to miscarriage, fertility difficulties, anxiety, depression, anger issues, women’s issues, and men’s issues. We are person-centered, coming from a Jungian background and a specialty of Sandplay therapy in the Kalffian tradition.
Who can benefit from your services?
We work with individuals, couples, and families from age 4 on up. We address a wide range of concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, relationship challenges, and life transitions. We have a special focus on moms, moms-to-be, and those desiring to be moms. We take special care to provide a safe place for those struggling with postpartum depression (PPD), who have experienced miscarriages, or are struggling with fertility challenges. You are the focus, and the attention is on your needs and walking with you to find your strength so you can spread your wings and fly.

Therapy and Expertise
What exactly is Sandplay therapy?
Sandplay therapy is a non-directed therapy in the tradition of Dora Kalff based on the theories of C.G. Jung. Kalff studied with Margaret Lowenfeld in London and learned about the use of a sand tray and miniatures. After her year of studying with Lowenfeld, Kalff developed what is now known as Sandplay. She desired to create “a free and protected space” where clients could work in safety and experience healing and change. Sandplay is for individuals of all ages—don’t let the word “play” mislead you! Though it certainly is a type of play, what is completed in the sand is work. That is how we refer to a client’s time in the sand—working in the sand. The essentials of Sandplay therapy are a specially proportioned sand tray, shelves of miniatures of a multitude of varieties, and an empathic therapist who provides the freedom and the protection that encourages the sandplayer to experience their inner, often unrealized, selves in a safe and non-judgmental space.
How do I know if therapy or counseling is right for me?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, lost, or seeking personal growth, therapy/counseling can help. Therapy is ideal for addressing mental health concerns like anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, relationship problems, including communication, parenting struggles, anger, and other emotional or relational struggles. We offer a free 15-minute consultation to explore what would be best for you.
What can I expect during my FIRST SESSION?
Your first session will consist of getting to know you as we explore your background, goals, challenges, needs, and concerns. You will find a free and protected space that is safe for you to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable. We will also begin discussing the development of an individualized treatment plan, which will guide your journey to healing and empowerment. Sessions are warm, empathetic, and focused on building trust. You can expect a confidential, judgment-free environment.
How long does therapy typically last?
Each session will be from 45-60 minutes. The overall length will be dependent upon each person’s needs and experiences. Occasionally, someone may find the strength and healing that they need in 6-10 sessions; however, for most, their needs will run much deeper and will take longer to reach their goals. You will work with your counselor to develop a plan that is right for you.
Can you help with trauma or PTSD?
Yes, we specialize in trauma healing, including PTSD, using the evidence-based therapy of Sandplay. Talk therapy is also utilized based on individual needs and helps guide the process of healing and growth. You will find a free and protected space that is safe and supportive for your healing or the healing of your loved ones.
What types of therapy approaches do you use?
We utilize evidence-based practices with an emphasis on Sandplay Therapy. With Sandplay, clients can express the inexpressible and process their needs in ways that are beneficial specifically to them. Talk therapy approaches are from a Jungian perspective, with Rogerian principles reflected as well. Oftentimes, counselors seek to use CBT or brief therapy methods. At Phoenix Rising, we believe that true healing goes beyond the cognitive realm and real change can only come about through time and processing in a free and protected space with a trusted counselor. If you have been in counseling in the past and found it lacking or not effective, allow the counselors at Phoenix Rising to help you find the help and strength that have eluded you in the past. Our approach is individually tailored so each person is able to have a positive experience that benefits them.
